Frequentis AG: Drone management in Estonian airspace
Vienna (pta013/19.05.2020/07:59) -
* COVID-19 drone operations to support Estonian emergency services
"We cooperated successfully with the Estonian air navigation service provider, EANS, in the SESAR Joint Undertaking U-space project in the Gulf of Finland (GOF)," says Frequentis CEO Norbert Haslacher. "The aim was to ensure safe and secure drone flight operations for a number of essential scenarios. Now our Flight Information Management System is being used again in Estonia in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic". Together with EANS and the manufacturer of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), Threod Systems, Frequentis enabled the Estonian blue-light organisations to carry out important drone missions for medical transports and for gathering information during the COVID-19 lockdown. For example, the Estonian police together with the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences used drones in several regions of the country to inform the public about the rules of the lockdown and to monitor ongoing activities. Among other things, strict movement restrictions were introduced between the islands and the Estonian mainland during the lockdown to stop the spread of the virus. Local authorities also need assistance in transporting medical supplies to remote locations or islands and in forwarding COVID-19 test samples. This meant that both manned and unmanned flights had to be coordinated in Estonian airspace - similar to what had been carried out during the test series of the GOF U-space project last summer. As with the previous year, the Frequentis Flight Information Management System (FIMS) was used to enable the joint exchange of information between all participants in the airspace. The FIMS provides air traffic controllers with a complete real-time picture of the air situation and allows both manned flights and drones to share airspace safely. About EANS EANS (Lennuliiklusteeninduse Aktsiaselts) is the Estonian air navigation service provider, which is part of the Estonian Ministry of Economy and Communications of the Republic of Estonia. The company has many years of extensive experience in the modernisation of air traffic management (ATM) and aeronautical information management (AIM) systems, airspace organisation and the design and implementation of air traffic control procedures. About Threod Systems Threod Systems, a privately-owned Estonian company, specializes in the design, manufacture and operation of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) designed to collect and use information in military, government and civil applications. About Estonian Academy of Security Sciences The Estonian Academy of Security Sciences (EASS) is a state institution, who's objective is through internal security related academic education, research and development activities, and also through the training of honest and competent public servants, to create a secure state and conditions for stable development across the state of Estonia and therewith contribute to the security of the entire European Union (EU).
